1888- Mass celebrated for the first time in the Hamilton area, at a private home- beginning of St. John’s parish. A small frame church was built that same year
1888-1900- Parish was in charge of Franciscan Fathers from Emporia.
1900- Church destroyed by fire
1902- Present frame church completed on the same site and dedicate din the summer of that year.
1902-1921- Parish was a mission to St. Mary’s parish in Moline. The pastor there came by train once a month and celebrated Mass for the Hamilton parishioners.
1915- Small addition made to the rear of the church- allowing room for organ and confessional areas
1917- Discovery of oil in Greenwood County- number of parishioners grew rapidly at this time
1921- St. John’s became a mission to Sacred Heart parish in Eureka with the arrival of Fr. Howard Gunning as the first resident pastor there.
1930- Original bell tower removed for safety reasons.
1954- Establishment of St. Teresa parish in Madison. Hamilton becomes mission to Madison- this was the arrangement until 1976.
1957- Temporary rectory was set up down the street from the church. This arrangement was short-lived.
1976- St. John’s becomes mission to Sacred Heart in Eureka once again.
1977- Extensive renovations were done to the church- new pews, new carpet and outdoor siding, with the addition of a small social room south of the altar area, allowing room for overflow crowds and social activities
1988- Parish celebrates 100th anniversary with a special Mass of Thanksgiving in the church followed by the large festive meal in the Hamilton Grade School Gym.
1993- Announcement of possible closing of the parish, due to the shortage of priests in the Diocese of Wichita. This decision was reversed by the Chancery later this year.
